A Guide to Mattress Sizes

Mattresses

Most UK mattresses are constructed using imperial measurements:

Single 36'' x 75'' which is (91.5cms x 190.5cms) but usually described as (90cms x 190cms)
Double 54'' x 75'' which is (137cms x 190.5cms) but usually described as (137cms x 191cms)
King 60'' x 78'' which is (152.5cms x 198cms) but usually described as (150cms x 200cms)
Super King 72'' x 78'' which is (183cms x 198cms) but usually described as (183cms x 200cms)

But mainland European sizes are becoming increasingly popular:

Single 90cms x 200cms (35.4'' x 78.75'')
Double 140cms x 200cms (55.1'' x 78.75'')
Queen 160cms x 200cms (63'' x 78.75'') (most popular)
King 190cms x 200cms (74.8'' x 78.75'')

And larger widths can be made by special order from specialist makers:

Eastern king 200cms which is (78.75'') or sometimes described as 78''
Emperor 210cms which is (82.7'') or sometimes described as 84''
Large emperor 215cms which is (86.7'')
Caesar 240cms which is (94.5'') or sometimes described as 96''

Mattresses (the floppy bit) are available on their own, or complete with a divan base (the rigid bit)(although these can also be sprung). Normally the latter is required if the mattress assembly is to sit on the floor on its own, and it will be fitted with castors so it can be moved around the floor relatively easily. We can make your bed to suit either option.

With a divan set, the castors will be removed and it will sit on supporting battens fixed around the inside perimeter of the bed's oak mattress rails. The disadvantage of this is that it can result in the top of the mattress sitting too far off the ground (the height from the floor to the topside of the supporting battens is greater than the height of the removed castors). However, this is a personal thing and some of our clients like a really high mattress. The obvious advantage is that you can make the bed without needing a trip to the osteopath!

If you choose a mattress without a divan base, then we will make the bed with removable weight supporting slats that are slotted into the mattress oak side rails, over which 18mm ply is laid. This creates a firm flat surface to support the (floppy) mattress. The advantage of this option is there's more scope for adjusting the height of the top of the mattress to a lower level. We drill large holes over the ply to help ventilate the mattress.

As previously mentioned, mattress height from the floor is a matter of personal taste. In the 70's it was fashionable to have the mattress sitting directly on the floor and, conversely, we have made beds where the mattress is 85cms from the floor...and our clients love it. The most popular height seems to hover between 65cms and 75cms. If you like to sit on the edge of the bed (I do, to put my shoes on!), then somewhere between 50cms (usual seat height) and 60cms may be better.

Whatever you choose, it is essential we have the following information before we commence making your bespoke oak reproduction bed:

1. The configuration (i.e. divan set or mattress on its own).
2. Exact actual overall mattress/divan-set dimensions L x W x H (rather than those used as a description by the manufacturer or retailer).
3. Your preferred finished height from the floor.
