Gateleg Tables
Gateleg tables, all bespoke and handmade in Britain, from solid oak and fruitwood. These are very close copies of antique gatelegs, that will make comfortable 4, 6 and 8 seater dining tables and will fit perfectly into any period country style interior.
Gateleg tables were developed from the simple folding table in the late 1500's but these early pieces were generally quite small (widely referred to today as credence tables), folding on one side only and, when not open, were intended to sit against a wall to act as a side table. Gateleg tables for dining were at their most fashionable in the 17th century, particularly in middle class homes. A popular arrangement at the time, was to have several small gateleg tables in one room, so a large number of people could be seated in small and intimate groups. They are normally oval in shape, but can also be rectangular or octagonal.
