How to get a period style wardrobe into a cottage bedroom

How to get a large oak period style double wardrobe (actually slightly more than double), via a narrow 'dog-leg' staircase, up into our clients Oxfordshire cottage bedroom.

Here was the challenge. A staircase set inside what is effectively an alcove, starting with a winder and having an extended ceiling above, restricting headroom, then moving onto a small half landing, with several more steps onto the full landing.

Stairs

Some critical measurements taken on-site (we'd just delivered and installed two oak beds and bedside cabinet) and the salient points plotted onto our CAD program, confirmed the maximum dimensions of any piece which could be navigated up the stairs.

Piece by piece, this photo* sequence shows the wardrobe taking shape in the bedroom:

Period style oak wardrobe base and gable

The wardrobe drawer section base (minus drawers), with right hand gable and panelled front slotting into mortise slots pre-machined into the top of the base.

Period style oak wardrobe back and divider

The wardrobe back screwed into place, followed by the divider which separates the hanging section on the left (you can see the collars for the hanging rails), from the shelf section on the right.

Period style oak wardrobe cornice and left gable

The cornice, with its dentil moulding, is fixed into place, followed by the left hand gable and, at the same time, the two brass hanging rails are located in the pre-fitted collars.

Period style oak wardrobe ceiling doors and drawers

The ceiling is dropped in and secured with screws and finally the fitting of the doors, drawers and shelves.

The finished article! Note the right hand blank panel, incorporated to prevent the door and drawer colliding with the chimney breast. This was a custom built addition. The standard version is below, with optional carved pillars (click on the photo to take you to the actual product page, with size, which can be changed of course, and price).
