16th century style hand carved oak griffin. One of a pair, that guard the occupants of our clients Gothic style oak bed. The inspiration for these came from Trinity College, Cambridge, which was founded by Henry V111, in 1546. Mythical creatures were a popular form of conveying symbolism and metaphor during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor period. Griffins (or gryphon) have the body of a lion (the king of animals), with the head and wings of an eagle (the king of birds), and we're employed, in a symbolic manner, to guard treasures and priceless possessions.
