Thumbnail carving detail on our bespoke oak refectory table, from our Chalvington range. This was a popular form of horizontal decoration on many types of 17th century oak furniture and is executed with various sizes of gouge chisels. You can also see here, the applied moulding, which runs around the perimeter of the table base. Both the above, are options that can be added to most of our reproduction dining tables. Note that the end rails are channel moulded rather than carved. This was usual on early carved long tables, where the top overhang conceals. Even then, time was money, and wasn't wasted on unseen areas.
