Turned and carved cup-and-cover

Turned and carved cup-and-cover oak finial, of curvy form, on the foot post of one of our linenfold beds. The top 'cover' section is hand carved with bulbous gadrooning and the lower 'cup' section, with acanthus leaves. Both forms of decoration, including the cup and cover design (sometimes left plain), were popular during the exuberant Elizabethan period.
