A circa 1500 style oak bed with medieval tracery carving to the headboard. We got the inspiration for the design from an ancient bench end, from Great Tew Church in the Cotswold Hills, and which is now stored at The Victoria and Albert Museum, in London.
This bed was finished in our Chalvington range 'Old Flaxen' colour.
The half round mouldings on the medieval tracery framework, are also replicated on the low foot posts where, cleverly, a short section can be removed for access to the otherwise hidden mattress rail fixings. This removable piece is kept in place by a small magnet on the back of the moulding, which attaches to the bolt head.
Other features typical of the period include 'dart-stop' chamfers, hand carved where the posts cross sectional shape change from square to octagonal (as seen in the photos above).
To personalise this bed to our client, we carved two roundels on the headboard end of the mattress rails. The first one is our clients coat of arms. The second cross keys, represent the symbolic keys that Jesus gave to St Peter, to represent the keys to heaven. This symbol was commonly used in medieval times and can be seen on a number of early buildings in the city of York, for example.
Although we made this bed to custom fit our clients massive bespoke mattress, it is available as standard for a king size and super king mattress (see drop down box below and also our Guide To Mattress Sizes). Like our existing client, who commissioned this bed, you may want us to build it around a specific mattress size, as well as height from floor, so do feel free to contact us to discuss options.
