Hand carved oak TV cabinet, based on early boarded (made from boards) Medieval aumbries (or 'dole cupboards' or 'hutches'), with Flamboyant Period style tracery to the bi-fold doors and technology compartment flap.
The Flamboyant Period dates from the around the late 15th century and is one of the last forms of Gothic architecture, prevalent in France and Spain and, to a lesser degree, England. It is characterised by flame like 'S' shaped geometric curves.
As with the majority of cases of definitive architectural fashion (i.e. Greek, Roman, Gothic), the basis of the designs invariably filtered down onto furniture, in various forms of simplification and adaptation, or even with added embellishment. Typically, lavishly carved or otherwise ornate, labour intensive furniture, such as we have adapted here for 21st century use, would have been status pieces commissioned by the wealthy, i.e church, royalty, nobility.
The above photo shows the TV cabinet with bi-fold doors and technology compartment cover, closed. The compartment cover carving is pierced right through, a frequent occurrence in early pieces for aeration, but in our (more modern) case, it is so the dvd/pvr player, sky box etc. can be operated via remote control, without having to drop the cover down.
Following on from the last paragraph, with the TV in use, it's just the bi-fold doors that need opening. You can see how they hinge right round, to fold neatly against the sides of the unit.
By simply dropping the cover down, the technology compartment can easily be accessed. The piercings are clearly visible on the reverse side of the cover.
On the back of the piece is a ventilated panel which, being attached with magnetic catches, is also easily removable for access. There is also a void under the rear of the lower floor, so any multi-extension sockets can be tucked neatly out of the way. With these added features, and the way the unit has been designed internally, any possibly distracting light from behind, i.e. by wall lights, is pretty well eliminated.
The four carved bi-fold doors, with typically period moulded edges and stylised flower heads and leaves. You can also see the double depth carving, which accentuates the sweeping half-round ribs and lancet heads of the lower section.
This piece was 'Medium Aged' and finished in our Chalvington range 'Antique Straw' colour. Note that this relatively new colour may not be listed in our finishes options, but it is nevertheless available. We can send you samples of all our colours, if required.
Being bespoke, this cabinet would be made to incorporate your size of TV, just as we've done here with our clients example. Consequently, we would need the dimensions (width x depth x height, without stand), plus exact width apart and location of the four rear fixing holes. Price includes delivery, but not fixing or installation of the TV and accessories. We would advise using a qualified audio/visual specialist to carry out this part of the project.
