Alfriston School & Berwick Church Swift Conservation Project

Alfriston Primary School, in partnership with 12th century St Michael and All Angels parish church, in nearby Berwick village (just a short walk from our showroom), are running a swift conservation project during 2017. This project, in response to the decline in numbers in the UK, was inspired by a mourner at a funeral service last year. The church was full and they were standing outside, on the ancient mound on the southern side of the churchyard, where they observed the seemingly respectful behaviour of 3 or 4 swifts (normally quite noisy), during the service.

For the project, as well as nesting boxes, around 115 of these models were made by pupils of the local school and are painted with colours to represent the countries which swifts fly over during migration. They are hung all around the interior of the 'Bloomsbury Set' decorated church.

Did you know?

After leaving the nest, swifts will fly for three years without touching the ground. They sleep on the wing, with one eye shut and one half of the brain asleep at a time The fastest recorded speed of flight was 69 mph and their migration is one of the longest in the world, at around 14,000 miles to Equatorial and Southern Africa, and back each year.
