To-date, we've furnished eight rooms of their fabulous country house and this is the latest addition to their dining room. A James 1st period style oak court cup-board, or buffet. These pieces were at their most popular between 1580 and 1650, but the principal lingers on far beyond those seven or so decades. Indeed today, the word buffet is still a familiar term and refers to a side table with one or more shelves, or platforms. The original purpose, as confirmed by various contemporary inventories, was for the display of plate, various drinking vessels, basins and such like.
