Typically, original chests would have been transported around the country (in the 14th, 15th and 16th century, wealthy owners and royalty were, by choice or circumstance, very mobile) and frequently rested on damp floors. Even stationary, in rural churches or city cathedrals, would have taken their toll. Inevitably, discolouration, rot, wear and damage would leave their mark.
