Pierced and carved gothic decoration on our bespoke ('Old Flaxen' colour) 16th century style boarded oak aumbry, or dole cupboard. These decorative devices were originally there to provide ventilation, for food left outside churches for the poor. Which is where the phrase, "on the dole" came from. Far from poor, of course, our Surrey clients, who commissioned this piece for their cottage kitchen, wanted the ventilation for the same food storage purpose.
